Cemetery Guide

Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

New Jersey cemeteries each maintain their own regulations governing monument height, setback distances from lot lines, permitted materials, and approved imagery. NJ Memorial Monuments confirms the rules for every cemetery and section before the design drawing is produced, ensuring the finished monument is compliant without revision.

Foundation Requirements

Monument foundations in New Jersey must reach the frost line — approximately 36 to 42 inches below grade — to prevent seasonal heaving. NJ Memorial Monuments's installation crew prepares foundations to the depth and method specified by each cemetery and sets every monument level before leaving the site.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

Faith-based cemeteries in New Jersey carry denomination-specific design guidelines. Catholic cemeteries typically require a cross or religious symbol. Jewish cemeteries in Bergen and Passaic counties often welcome Hebrew inscriptions while limiting figural imagery. Orthodox sections may require flat markers only. NJ Memorial Monuments builds these denomination-specific requirements into the design from the first consultation.

Our Collection

Our Monuments (General) Collection

Memorial Monument

NJ Memorial Monuments memorial monuments span the complete line used in New Jersey cemeteries. Upright memorial monuments in die-base-cap construction stand 20 to 36 inches on the die and carry inscriptions, religious symbols, and sculptural elements with the proportions of classical craftsmanship. Slant memorial monuments provide the same design detail at a lower profile for height-limited cemetery sections. Flat memorial monuments lie at grade — required in many of New Jersey's park-style sections — carrying full inscriptions and custom motifs cleanly. Bench memorial monuments and mausoleum components complete the range. Companion memorial monuments present two names as a unified composition; family memorial monuments carry larger dies with blank panels for future inscriptions. All are hand-carved from American-made granite by NJ Memorial Monuments artisans in our Morris County, NJ workshop, with inscriptions cut to a depth that holds definition through generations of New Jersey weather.

Granite Options

NJ Memorial Monuments offers four granite colors across the complete monument line. Barre Gray provides the traditional cool silver tone suited to most NJ cemetery sections. India Red adds warmth for companion and family monuments. Mahogany provides deep burgundy presence. Black Galaxy offers vivid contrast with gold mineral flecks visible in sunlight. All four are American-made and displayed in our Morris County, NJ showroom.

Custom Design Process

Every monument begins with a family-approved scaled design drawing. Nothing enters fabrication without written approval. Hand-carving, polishing, and assembly are completed in our Morris County, NJ workshop. Our installation crew handles foundation preparation and cemetery placement throughout all 14 NJ counties. Families are notified when the monument is set.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

Every NJ Memorial Monuments monument follows six stages. Step one: consultation — meeting with the family and confirming the cemetery's regulations. Step two: scaled design drawing for written family approval before any granite is ordered. Step three: granite slab inspection at our Morris County, NJ workshop. Step four: hand-carving — artisans incise inscriptions and relief work using chisels and pneumatic tools for lasting depth and definition. Step five: polishing to mirror finish and assembly. Step six: installation — our crew prepares the foundation to New Jersey's frost depth and sets the monument level.

“We chose NJ Memorial Monuments for my father's memorial monument after seeing the quality of monuments they had placed for two other families in our Somerset County cemetery. The finished piece exceeded our expectations, and the staff who served us in Polish made the entire process far easier for our family.” — Krzysztof, Somerset County NJ
